NOTES: One of the last gasps of the five-man lineup, The Best of What We Know was recorded on a "borrowed" four-track recorder. (The 4-track was actually borrowed, the owner just didn't know it.) The idea was, basically, to record all of our songs (which, in practice, meant the ones we were still playing) and pick the best for a full-length demo tape. We spent an evening putting down songs until we were too tired to bother, anymore. We managed to get most of them down, with "Popcorn In My Throat" and "Step Into the Confessional, Johnny" being notable exceptions. (In fact, both were attempted. "Popcorn's" first attempt was atrocious and the band gave up. As for "Johnny"... Jeff turned up when the band was almost finished recording, with Tread's Liz Gold. Marty and I had made a habit of doing imitations of various musicians in rehearsals, and Marty proceeded to his Liz impression while she was there. I couldn't make it all the way through a take without laughing and so we didn't finish this one, either.) The vocal and guitar overdubs were done the following afternoon, and I spent the next week mixing.

The final results were compiled into a master, but that's as far as the project ever got. Before we could even start an insert, Marty announced his departure from the band, because he had decided to move to New York to live with Stephanie, his girlfriend of about 5 years. We set a date for his final show and considered our options. In the midst of all this, Rob, unhappy in general with the band, left. The three of us left decided not to release the tape and instead to concentrate on writing new material and reworking the existing material for the new lineup. However, many of these tracks appeared (in remixed form) on The Ultimate Cash In.
